Dawood Ibrahim Biography

Dawood Ibrahim Biography: Religion. Age, Career, Net Worth, Nationality

Posted on June 23, 2026

Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar is India’s most wanted fugitive, the head of D-Company, one of South Asia’s most powerful organised crime syndicates, and a figure whose alleged involvement in the 1993 Bombay bombings that killed over 250 people elevated him from a regional crime boss to a globally designated terrorist.

Born on December 26, 1955, in Khed, Maharashtra, India, he built an empire from the streets of Bombay’s criminal underworld to become an international criminal figure with alleged operations spanning narcotics, extortion, contract killings, money laundering, and terrorism across South Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.

India, the United States, and the United Nations have all designated Dawood Ibrahim a global terrorist. He is believed to have been living in Karachi, Pakistan since the 1993 bombings, a claim the Pakistani government has repeatedly denied.

His network, known as D-Company, is alleged to operate across multiple countries and is believed to have significant connections to both Pakistan’s intelligence establishment and international terrorist organisations including al-Qaeda. He remains one of the most sought-after fugitives in the world, with India repeatedly demanding his extradition through diplomatic channels.

Profile

Full Name Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar
Born December 26, 1955
Age 70 years old
Birthplace Khed, Ratnagiri district, Maharashtra, India
Nationality Indian (fugitive)
Occupation Alleged Organised Crime Leader (fugitive)

Early Life

Dawood Ibrahim was born on December 26, 1955, in Khed, a small town in the Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra. His father, Ibrahim Kaskar, was a police constable in Bombay (now Mumbai).

The family moved to Dongri, one of Bombay’s dense and historically crime-affected neighbourhoods, where Dawood grew up.

His father’s legitimate employment as a police officer did not prevent Dawood from gravitating toward the criminal networks that operated openly in the Dongri area.

He began his criminal career as a teenager, initially as a petty criminal before coming under the influence of gang leader Haji Mastan, a pioneering Bombay smuggler who later became a legitimate businessman.

Career in Crime

Dawood Ibrahim rose through Bombay’s criminal hierarchy through the 1970s and 1980s by a combination of ambition, organisational talent, and extreme violence.

He initially operated within the gang of Haji Mastan and subsequently under Karim Lala before breaking away to establish his own criminal organisation.

His conflict with a rival Bombay gang, the Pathan gang led by Alamzeb and Amirzada, resulted in a bloody gang war through the late 1970s and early 1980s in which multiple people on both sides were killed. Dawood’s faction eventually prevailed, and by the mid-1980s D-Company had become the dominant organised crime network in Bombay, controlling protection rackets, smuggling operations, and contract killings across the city.

Dawood relocated to Dubai in the late 1980s, from where he directed his Bombay operations and expanded his network internationally, particularly into the Gulf region.

His alleged involvement in the serial bombings of March 12, 1993, in Bombay, which killed 257 people and injured over 700, transformed his status from regional crime boss to internationally designated terrorist.

The bombings are widely believed to have been organised in retaliation for the destruction of the Babri Masjid mosque in Ayodhya and the anti-Muslim riots that followed. Indian intelligence and law enforcement have attributed the bombings’ planning to Dawood’s network, allegations he has denied.

Following the 1993 bombings, Dawood fled Dubai and is widely believed to have been sheltered in Pakistan, where Indian authorities believe he continues to reside in Karachi. Pakistan has repeatedly denied he is present in its territory.

The United States Treasury Department and the UN Security Council have both designated him a Specially Designated Global Terrorist.

His organisation is alleged to have continued operating through the 1990s and 2000s, with alleged activities including narcotics trafficking into Europe and the Indian subcontinent, match-fixing in cricket, extortion of the Bollywood film industry, and money laundering through hawala networks.

His exact current status and whereabouts remain subjects of active intelligence activity and diplomatic tension between India and Pakistan.

Net Worth

Dawood Ibrahim is estimated to control assets worth billions of dollars, distributed across multiple countries through various business fronts and financial networks.

US Treasury designation materials have described his network as one of the largest and most powerful criminal organisations in the world. Specific figures are inherently speculative given the clandestine nature of his alleged operations.

Conclusion

Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar represents one of the most significant unsolved diplomatic and security challenges in South Asia.

His alleged transformation from Bombay street criminal to international terrorist figure is a story that intersects with the deepest fault lines of religion, politics, terrorism, and geopolitics in the Indian subcontinent. For India, his capture or extradition remains a long-standing grievance in its relationship with Pakistan.

For Pakistan, denying his presence on its soil has become a point of sustained diplomatic friction. The story of Dawood Ibrahim, still unresolved more than three decades after the 1993 Bombay bombings, continues to shape regional security dynamics in ways that affect hundreds of millions of people.
